Dear Friend,

I am so thankful to have the opportunity to serve as the Ward 2 representative on the Des Moines City Council for the past 7 years. It has been my honor to serve as the voice for the residents, neighborhoods, businesses, and organizations of Northeast Des Moines.

My current term expires at the end of 2023, and after careful consideration, I have decided to run for re-election. I am writing today to ask for your financial support.

I have worked hard to build a reputation among neighbors, community groups and my colleagues in city government as a leader who takes a balanced approach to both policy and process. I have been a cheerleader for neighborhoods in Ward 2, advancing several major infrastructure projects including the Hamilton Drain project in the Highland Park neighborhood.   I have been a leader in the city’s support for revitalization and development of Riverview Park which now includes a performance stage and playground accessible for children of all abilities. After devastating floods a few years ago, I worked to immediately mobilize city resources to clean out damaged homes and purchase homes that were destroyed.

I am running for re-election because there is much that still needs to be done.

  • I am committed to supporting and respecting the hard-working men and women of the Des Moines Police Department and Des Moines Fire Department. I will do everything I can to make sure that they have the staff, training, and equipment they need to do their jobs and keep us safe.
  • I will continue to advocate for infrastructure improvements in Ward 2, making sure that streets are repaired, aging storm sewers are replaced, additional flood protection is added along Fourmile Creek, and sidewalks are installed, especially along school and DART routes.
  • I will also continue to focus on fiscal responsibility, making sure that the city budget addresses essential core services and eliminates unnecessary spending. I will continue to work with business owners and developers to promote increased economic development and I will fight for smart growth and common-sense zoning regulations with the goal of adding both commercial and residential development to increase the city’s tax base.

Your contribution to my campaign will be used to help me reach out to likely voters, inform them about the issues facing our city, and explain my vision for how to make Des Moines an even better place to live, work, and play.

Thank you for considering this request. If you have questions or if there is anything I can do to help, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Linda Westergaard,
Des Moines City Council
